ok its gonna b hard to explain for someine like me.
i have a D drive of 36.4 GBs. when i check the properties of D drive it says only 9.5 GB is free. which means 26GB almost have been covered by my files n stuff. but when i open my drive and select all files and then check the properties it shows that they have a total size of 20.5 GB! i've been facing this problem since i bought a system for the first time. and there seems to be no solution! i m using ESET NOD32 and i've checked, there are no viruses and no hidden files. then where the hell is my 6 Gb! and the only solution i ve been able to find is that move all the files to another drive and then format the D drive! but it takes a lot of time and is really annoying too! plz help me if anyone knows what to do.

That's funny and awkward.... don't think the otherway... If something's eating your space, you should be able to see it. You must have tried to unhide hidden files, but this does not really unhide everything. To see everything, do the following:

1. Head to Folder Options in control panel

2. hit the View tab

3. In the selections below, click on 'Show hidden files and folder' (which you probably must have done) and uncheck another option 'Hide Operating System Files'

This should reveal everything... Now go have a look.

Another thing, certain part/space of a drive is reserved for the System Restore. And this takes up a lot of space. Right Click on the window after opening My Computer. Head to System Restore or System Protection tab, now click on a button named Configure. Adjust the Restore space to lowest and you'll recover all of it. This is for Windows 7. For XP the tab name might be little different. Try looking into every tab and you find your way to reduce Restore Space.

Hope this helps.. :)

For some immediate 'c' disk space gain, delete all but the most recent Java version & update from 'Add or Remove Programs' (see 'Control Panel'> Add or Remove...);

Also, delete old 'Restore Points' (if your system is behaving itself) like this:

Make a new Restore Pt.; then go to System Tools> Disk cleanup> (after it's done examining the disk)> More Options> System Restore button @ bottom> Clean up> Yes.

One disk performance item is to 'compress contents' and 'allow index service'. These help optimize file recovery speed & save disk space.

Start> my computer> right click 'c' drive> properties> general tab: here check both boxes & 'OK'.

Don't freak out: it may say hours (or days) to run, but this drops dramatically as the process advances. Just walk away and let 'er run for the duration: it will self close when done.

Depending on the files & sizes, it may take several hours to do (maybe do it at night @ bedtime?).

Download "CCleaner" http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

Freeware.

Run the various tab headings.
