Why is my computer so slow? How can I make it download things faster? (10pts best answer)?

And please don't offer me any registry cleaners. I have 4gigs of ram, a 2.9 AMD athalon x2 64 Cpu NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT 32 bit operating system (vista) My internet provider is Att, They are telling me with the internet I have, I am supposed to be downloading things at 768 Megs per second but whenever I want to download a game, it downloads at 40 kilobytes per second, it takes days to download games, how can I fix this? i closed all the windows, ive defraged my computer, ive ran disk cleanup, and I've deleted all temp files and files that I dont use anymore..........PLEASE HELP

Have you run your anti-virus software over and over in hopes of your computer running faster, but never works. I'll give you another option to try.

Run disk de-fragment

Step1

In the bottom left hand corner of your screen there will be the "start" button. Click on it.

Step2

Move the mouse just up from the start button and hold the mouse cursor(arrow) over "all programs".

Step3

Another set of menus will appear, hold your mouse cursor over "accessories" .

Step4

Another set of menus will appear, hold your mouse cursor over "system tools".

Step5

A set of programs will appear, select "Disk Defragmenter".

Step6

When this screen pops up, select "defragment". When this screen pops up, select "defragment".

Step7

Now you have to wait for the defragmentation process which can take up to a couple of hours.

Step8

When finished, you can view the report if you wish. It tells you how much space you've opened up.

First of all, the hardware on your computer ( aside from the network card / router ), doesn't affect your download speed. So it really doesn't matter what your system specs are, and certainly not what graphics card you have.



Second, there is no internet service that provides 768 Mb/sec download speeds. Probably they are referring to megaBITS per second, which is quite a bit less:

1 megabyte = 1024 kilobytes

1 kilobyte = 1024 bytes

1 byte = 8 bits

A megabit is 1000 bits



768 megabits * 1000 = 768000 bits / 8 = 96000 bytes / 1024 = 93.75 kilobytes.



So really you should be getting 93kb/sec. The lost 40kb is easily accounted for by varying servers. Your download speed is affected by the server you are downloading from, not just your connection.

Whats wrong with registry cleaners? I use CCleaner to keep my computer lean, and use the registry tool to remove unwanted entries. As to your ATT question, I think you're confused about the numbers, and kilobytes/megabytes. No ISP in America offers a 768MB connection. The fastest I know of is Verizon FIOS or Optimum Online who offer, I think, 20MB services. It sounds like you have a 768k DSL line. If that is indeed the case, then 768k is the MAXIMUM you can expect in PERFECT conditions. So if your downloading at 40kbps, that sounds about right. If you want to download faster, you're going to need a faster line from ATT.

When you have good internet speed , this doesnt mean you will download files with static speed.



I mean its depend on where you are downloading, if the hosting which you download from have a low bandwith you cannot see your full speed .

Maybe your PC has a virus,so try scanning your PC with an anti-virus.There are certain viruses which prohibit you to use your internet to its maximum or full potential.Try reading the reference i typed. Registry cleaners could also help as certain registries also contain viruses.
