Ok so we just got a new laptop. I tried to install the drivers etc for the connection we use with the old laptop, the one I'm using right now. When I put the disc in to install it, the dialogue box didn't come up automatically which isn't a good sign in itself, is it? I eventually found where the download was and I installed it but when I put the modem in the lights remained red - they are meant to go green if all is well. It didn't work at all.

So what should I do? Is there a way to get wireless internet? Would we have to pay for that as well? I heard about using a router which you can do if you have a computer with internet, which we do, this laptop with it's dial-up modem (Virgin Net, using a Speedtouch modem). But wouldn't both computers need to be on at the same time?

I tried to connect to a wireless network in the area, but I don't understand how it's allowed that people can just use somebody else's internet. Does it work 24/7? Wouldn't we have to pay for that? Anyway, every link I clicked on required a password so what do I need to do?

Well you were working in the right area, the problem is with the drivers, the difference is that the old drivers most likely will not work with the new operating system, especially if it's windows 7. to get the card to work, you need to find the manufacturer's website that made the card and try to find a "New Drivers" page or tech support page and see if they have new drivers for your specific card and install those. If that doesn't work or isn't an option, your choices are limited.

Chances are that your new computer has a wireless modem built into it. That would allow it to connect with any wireless networks without protection, which you can find at cyber cafes and fast food restaurants. Most personal wireless networks are password protected to prevent people from leeching "free" internet from people who pay for it. As for setting up your own router, there may be wireless routers for dial-up connections, but I'm not aware of any. You would need like a broadband or dsl connection through ATT, Comcast, Charter, etc., just the cheapest one should do you fine. But once you had that, no, not both computers would have to be on, the router would get the "Internet" before either and then pass it out to them.

You need to upgrade from dialup if you want to be apart of modern society or have way too much time on your hands to sit waiting an hour for a 10mb download that should take 10 seconds. After you enter the 21st century with broadband you will then need a wireless router that runs a hard wire to your desktop and a wireless (wifi) signal to your laptop, that is if it has wifi built in and not made in the 80's but even so you can get a wireless adapter. As far as using other people's wifi they are secured with encryption keys so that you can't use and drain their bandwidth and yes internet works 24/7 but only for who pays for it and secures it.
